What types of leather are there?

Elk leather

Elk leather is considered one of the finest and most noble leathers in the world. HUNTER sources it exclusively from the forests of Scandinavia. Each year, only a limited number of elks are allowed to be hunted, ensuring that the ecological balance in the Scandinavian forests is always maintained. The meat is mainly used in local gastronomy, making the leather a byproduct of residue utilization, but unfortunately it is often damaged due to improper removal of the animals from the forest. Anyone who knows how large a fully grown elk can be will be surprised at how little usable leather ultimately remains from such a magnificent animal. It can even happen that elk leather is scarce, namely whenever the animals are exposed to extreme seasonal conditions such as fly infestations or similar, which already affect the skin while the animal is still alive. The rarer and finer the actual leather yield, the more rigorous the raw material controls before HUNTER can finally use elk leather in production.

Bison leather

The high-quality and exclusive bison leather is characterized by its rustic, natural appearance and soft feel. The leather comes from sustainable and strictly controlled breeding in North America, guaranteeing controlled rearing of the animals and the highest quality of the raw material. Each piece of leather has a unique grain, so no product is the same as another, meaning you will always hold a very special one-of-a-kind item made from exclusive leather.

High-quality cowhide leather

We understand naturalness as a sign of individuality and quality. HUNTER offers a range of purely vegetable-tanned leather goods. In the range of high-quality cowhide leather, environmental protection is paramount. A special fatting process ensures the leather’s suppleness and the brilliant shine of the surface. Especially for the Porto series, an extract is obtained from olive tree leaves, a byproduct of olive cultivation, which serves as a tanning agent for the ecological leather with a feel-good factor. The extraction of the tanning agent is very environmentally friendly thanks to renewable raw materials and offers perfect residue utilization. The natural and sustainable leather impresses with a pleasantly soft feel to the touch, is still robust, and even emits a slightly Mediterranean scent.

With vegetable-tanned leather, color transfer can occur; please consider this especially for animals with lighter fur and, if in doubt, choose a darker shade for your four-legged friend. Did you know that high-quality cowhide leather is even completely compostable?

Soft full-grain cowhide leather

Soft full-grain cowhide leather is a high-quality and grippy smooth leather. This pleasant leather is dyed through, specially tanned, and oiled, resulting in particularly durable and robust leather. For extra comfort for dog and owner, products made from soft full-grain cowhide leather are usually lined with soft nappa leather. So-called fat leather is additionally heavily greased and thus even more robust and moisture-repellent.

Cow nappa leather

Cow nappa leather is a particularly soft, elastic fine leather. Products made from cow nappa leather in various colors are very grippy and pleasant to hold in the hand. The gentle dyeing preserves the natural character of the leather.

Nubuck leather

Nubuck leather is leather that has been sanded on the smooth side, characterized by a particularly soft and velvety surface. Products made from nubuck leather are also available in many attractive and vibrant colors and various styles, so you will surely find your favorite piece here.

Coated split leather

Products made from "coated split leather" consist of a genuine leather core and are particularly easy to care for due to their additional PU coating. The PU coating is a protective layer made of polyurethane. Faux leather

Faux leather is not an animal product but a textile fabric with a plastic coating. Products made from faux leather are lightweight, extremely soft, and grippy, making them pleasant to hold. Faux leather is washable and water-repellent as well as heat- and cold-resistant.
